Why do rock chips spread in the heat?

Rock chips spread in heat because glass expands and contracts with temperature, and a chip concentrates that stress at one weak point. Sudden changes are the worst: cold A/C or a car wash on sun-baked glass, or a hot day followed by a cool night. In the Temecula Valley, summer highs often pass 100°F, so chips can crack quickly.

What happens to a chip when glass heats up?

Glass expands as it heats and shrinks as it cools. When one part of the windshield is hotter than another, the parts pull against each other. A chip is a small break with sharp edges, and that stress collects at its tips until a crack runs out from it.

A clean, undamaged windshield handles normal temperature changes. A chipped one is weaker at exactly the spot where stress collects.

Which habits make a chip crack?

Anything that changes the temperature of part of the glass quickly. These are the common triggers:

TriggerWhat happensSafer approach
Max A/C on a sun-baked windshieldInside surface cools fast while outside stays hotStart with the fan on low and windows down, then increase
Defroster on high on a cold morningBottom of the glass heats fast while the rest is coldWarm up gradually on a lower setting
Car wash or hose on hot glassCold water hits glass that's been in the sunWash in the shade or after the glass cools
Parking in full sun, then driving into the eveningBig temperature swing in a few hoursShade or a sunshade when parked
Potholes, speed bumps and rough roadsBody flex twists the glassSlow down over bumps
Slamming doorsAir pressure and vibration push on the glassClose doors gently

Why are chips worse in the Temecula Valley?

The valley combines the main causes: hot summers, large day-night swings and a lot of road debris. Summer highs often reach 100°F or more, and evenings can cool off quickly. A windshield parked in the sun all afternoon goes through a wide temperature swing every day.

Road debris adds new chips. I-15 and I-215 carry heavy truck traffic, and construction zones leave gravel on the road. State routes like Hwy 79 (Winchester Road) and Hwy 74 through Hemet, Perris and Lake Elsinore have the same problem. Dust and grit also pit older windshields over time.

How fast can a chip turn into a crack?

It can happen in a single day, or a chip can sit for months. There's no way to predict it. A chip near the edge of the glass or with legs already coming off it tends to spread sooner, and one hot-to-cold shock can be enough.

Does the type of chip matter?

Yes. A round bullseye with no legs is the most stable. A star break, with short cracks already running out from the center, has more tips where stress can collect, so it's more likely to spread. Chips within a couple of inches of the edge are the riskiest, because the edge of the glass is under the most stress from the body and the bond.

Why is the edge of the windshield under more stress?

The edge is bonded to the car's frame, which heats and cools at a different rate than the glass. The body also flexes through the edge as you drive. A chip there sits where those forces meet, which is why edge cracks often run fast and usually mean a new windshield.

That's why it's worth repairing a chip soon. Repair fills the break with resin, which stops the stress from concentrating at the tips. See repair or replace for size limits.

How do I protect a chip until it's repaired?

Keep it clean, dry and away from temperature shock.

  1. Cover it with clear tape on the outside. This keeps dirt and water out of the break, which helps the resin bond later. Don't use colored tape that blocks your view.
  2. Don't press on it or poke it.
  3. Park in the shade or use a windshield sunshade.
  4. Ease into the A/C and defroster. Start low and increase gradually.
  5. Skip the car wash and avoid spraying cold water on hot glass.
  6. Close doors gently and take bumps slowly.
  7. Book a repair soon. In summer, sooner is better.

Does insurance pay to repair a chip?

Often, yes. Many insurers waive the deductible for chip repair because it's cheaper than replacing the windshield. Check your policy. Without insurance, our repairs start at $98. Read does insurance cover windshield replacement.

What if the chip already spread?

A single crack up to about 6 inches can often still be repaired. Longer cracks, cracks at the edge, or cracks in front of the driver usually need a new windshield. A crack that impairs your view can also be a problem under California Vehicle Code 26710. See the cracked windshield law.

Questions we hear a lot

Can a windshield crack from heat alone?

An undamaged windshield rarely cracks from heat alone. A chip or edge damage makes it much more likely, because the stress from uneven heating collects at the damaged spot.

Should I run the A/C if my windshield has a chip?

Yes, but ease into it. Start with the fan on low and the windows open, then increase once the cabin cools a bit. Blasting cold air onto a sun-baked windshield is a common way chips turn into cracks.

Is it safe to wash my car with a chipped windshield?

Wait until the glass is cool and the car is in the shade. Cold water on hot glass can spread a chip. Cover the chip with clear tape first so water and soap don't get into the break.

Why did my chip crack overnight?

Large day-night temperature swings put stress on the glass as it cools. A chip that sat in afternoon sun and then cooled quickly at night can crack without any other trigger.

Does a sunshade help protect a chipped windshield?

It helps. A sunshade keeps the inside of the cabin and the glass from getting as hot, which reduces the temperature swing when you start the car and turn on the A/C.
