Can my chip be repaired?
Usually yes, if you catch it early. A chip smaller than a quarter (about 1 inch across) or a single crack up to about 6 inches long is a good candidate. These are rules of thumb from industry repair practice, and the final call depends on what we see on the glass.
Repair is a good fit when:
- The chip is a bullseye, star, half-moon or small combination break
- The damage is not in the driver's direct line of sight
- The chip is at least a couple of inches from the edge of the glass
- The impact did not go through both layers of glass
- The chip is fairly fresh and not packed with dirt or car-wash soap
If you are unsure, text us a photo with a coin next to the chip. We'll tell you whether it looks repairable before we drive out.
What repair can't fix
Repair restores strength and slows spreading, but it has limits. We'll recommend windshield replacement instead when:
- The crack is longer than about 6 inches or has already reached the edge
- The damage sits in the driver's critical viewing area, where even a faint repair mark can distort the view
- The chip is directly in front of the camera behind the mirror, which can affect how the camera sees the road
- There are many chips, or the glass is sand-pitted and causes glare at night
- The inner layer of glass is damaged
Not sure which way to go? Our guide on repair or replace walks through the decision.
How rock chip repair works
The process takes about 30 minutes for one chip and a few minutes more for each extra chip.
- We inspect and clean the break. Moisture and debris come out so the resin can fill the whole break.
- We mount an injector over the chip. It alternates vacuum and pressure to pull air out and push resin in.
- We fill the break with clear resin. The resin is made to bend light much like glass does.
- We cure it with UV light. The resin hardens in minutes.
- We finish the surface. A thin pit filler goes on top and is scraped flush with the glass.
You can drive right away. Repair usually makes the chip much less visible, but it may leave a faint mark. The goal is strength and stopping the spread, not making the chip disappear.
Why chips spread in Temecula Valley heat
Heat and fast temperature changes are what turn a small chip into a long crack. Summer highs in the valley often pass 100°F, and the swing from a cool morning to a hot afternoon is large.
Glass expands as it warms. A chip creates a weak point, and stress collects at its tips. Common triggers:
- Blasting cold A/C on a windshield that has been baking in the sun
- Running the defroster on high on a cold morning
- Hitting a pothole or speed bump, which flexes the body and the glass
- Slamming a door with the windows up
- A car wash with hot water or high-pressure spray on a cold pane
Trucks on I-15 and I-215, and construction gravel on roads like Winchester Road, keep new chips coming. Read more in why rock chips spread in heat.
Until we arrive, park in the shade, keep the A/C off the glass and cover the chip with clear tape to keep dirt out.
What does rock chip repair cost?
Chip repair starts at $98 for the first chip and $25 for each additional chip repaired in the same visit. Mobile service is included.
| Damage | Our price |
|---|---|
| First rock chip | $98 |
| Each extra chip, same visit | $25 |
| Crack too long to repair | See windshield replacement |
Industry guides put chip repair at roughly $50 to $150 per chip in 2025 and 2026. Prices last updated November 2026.
Does insurance pay for chip repair?
Often, yes. Chip repair falls under the comprehensive part of most auto policies, and many insurers waive the deductible for repair because it is far cheaper for them than a new windshield. Check your policy, or call your insurer, to confirm how yours handles it.
If your insurer does waive the deductible, you may pay nothing. If not, our cash price is often below a typical comprehensive deductible. We work with every insurance company, and you can read how glass claims work before you call.
