What to do right after a car break-in
Get the car secured, document the damage and call us for the glass. A quick checklist:
- Take photos of the broken window, the glass inside the car and anything missing
- File a police report if anything was stolen or you plan to use insurance
- Don't sit on the seats until the glass is cleaned up. Tempered glass cubes get into seams and pockets.
- Leave the broken pieces where they are if you can. We clean them out properly.
Then text us a photo of the window and your VIN, and we'll quote the exact glass and book a time.
Tempered vs. laminated side glass
Most door windows are tempered glass, but more new cars use laminated side glass. The difference changes what the break looks like and how we clean it up.
| Tempered | Laminated | |
|---|---|---|
| How it breaks | Shatters into thousands of small, blunt cubes | Cracks but stays in one piece, held by a plastic layer |
| Where it's used | Most door windows, rear quarter glass, back glass | Windshields, plus front door glass on many newer and luxury cars |
| Cleanup | Glass spreads through the door, seats and carpet; must be vacuumed out | Comes out as one sheet; no cube cleanup, but cannot be "vacuumed out" |
| Benefit | Breaks into pieces less likely to cut deeply | Harder to break through; quieter cabin; better UV blocking |
Laminated door glass costs more and must be removed as a whole panel. If your car has it, we match it, because swapping to tempered changes noise, security and sometimes the fit. Your VIN tells us which you have.
Cleanup inside the door and cabin
When tempered glass breaks, much of it falls inside the door panel, not just into the car. Left there, it rattles, scratches the new glass and can jam the window track.
We clean it out as part of the job:
- Remove the inside door panel and vapor barrier
- Pull loose glass from inside the door shell and the bottom drain area
- Clean the window channels and run seals
- Vacuum seats, carpet, door pockets, console and seat tracks
- Reinstall the panel and barrier so water stays out
We get the vast majority of it, but small pieces can hide under seats or in trim. If you find a few later, that's normal.
Quarter glass and vent windows
Quarter glass is the small fixed window behind the rear door or behind the front door on some cars. Vent windows are small panes inside the door frame. Many are bonded with urethane or molded into a trim piece, rather than sliding in a track.
These often need a different part number from the main door glass and sometimes come with a new molding. Send us a photo so we can identify the exact piece before we come out.
Window regulator and motor problems
If your window fell into the door or went crooked without being hit, the problem is often the regulator or motor, not the glass. A broken regulator cable or clip can drop the glass.
We check the regulator during every side window replacement and test the window up and down several times. If the regulator is damaged, we'll tell you before replacing anything.
Covering the window until we arrive
Use heavy plastic and painter's tape or packing tape around the frame. Tape to the painted door frame for only a short time, since strong tape left in the sun can lift paint or leave residue. Park in a garage or facing away from wind if you can, and remove valuables from the car.
Does insurance cover a broken side window?
Usually, under the comprehensive part of your policy. You pay your comprehensive deductible and the insurer covers the rest. For vandalism or a break-in, a police report may help with the claim.
If your deductible is higher than our $219 starting price, paying cash is often cheaper. You can choose any shop in California, and we work with every insurer. See insurance claims.
