What makes a Tesla windshield different
A Tesla windshield is part of the car's driver assistance system. The forward cameras sit in a housing at the top center of the glass, looking through it. Getting the glass and camera mount right matters more than on most cars.
Features found on Tesla windshields, depending on model and year:
- Forward camera housing at the top of the glass, with a bracket bonded to the windshield
- Heated wiper park area along the bottom on some models, to free frozen wipers
- Acoustic laminated glass on some models, to reduce wind and road noise
- Rain and light sensing handled by the camera system rather than a separate sensor
- Frit and tint bands that must match for the camera and the look of the car
The Model 3 and Model Y windshields are similar in concept but are not the same part, and parts can change within a model's production years. The Model S and Model X use different glass again. The Model X windshield is unusually large, sweeping up over the front seats, and needs extra hands and care to set.
How Tesla cameras recalibrate
Teslas typically recalibrate their cameras automatically over the first miles of driving after glass work. During that time, Autopilot features may be limited until calibration finishes.
What we do on our end:
- Confirm the correct windshield and camera bracket by VIN
- Transfer or fit the camera housing and seat it correctly
- Check the car's screen for camera or Autopilot warnings before we leave
- Explain what to expect while the car finishes calibrating
If a warning stays on or Autopilot features don't return after normal driving, contact us. Some issues need Tesla service. See ADAS calibration for how calibration works on other makes.
Heads-up display windshields
A heads-up display (HUD) projects speed and directions onto the windshield. HUD windshields use a wedge-shaped interlayer: the plastic between the two layers of glass is slightly thicker at the top than the bottom. That angle lines up the reflections from the inner and outer glass surfaces.
If the replacement glass doesn't have the matching wedge, the projected image doubles or looks blurry. That's why HUD cars need the exact HUD windshield for that model, and why OEM glass is sometimes the safer choice. Read OEM vs. aftermarket windshields.
Heated windshields
Some vehicles have heating in the glass: either fine wires across the whole windshield or a heated strip where the wipers rest. The new glass must match, and we reconnect and test the heating before we leave.
Acoustic windshields
Acoustic glass has a sound-dampening layer in the interlayer. If your car was built with acoustic glass and gets a standard windshield, it can sound noticeably louder inside at highway speed. Your VIN shows which you have.
Rain and light sensors
Many cars have a rain and light sensor behind the mirror that runs the automatic wipers and headlights. It sits against the glass with a gel pad. We fit a new pad so the sensor reads correctly through the new glass.
Panoramic and large glass
Panoramic windshields and glass roofs are larger, heavier and more expensive than standard glass. They need careful handling, more urethane and sometimes more time to reach safe drive-away time. We plan these jobs for calm, dry weather.
Why your VIN matters
One model can have several windshield versions depending on features and build date. The VIN tells us exactly which one your car was built with: camera bracket, HUD, heating, acoustic layer, sensors and tint. Ordering by VIN avoids the most common problem with specialty glass: a part that looks right but doesn't work right.

What does a Tesla or specialty windshield cost?
Specialty windshields cost more than standard glass. Our posted starting price with camera calibration is $549, and Tesla, HUD, heated and large panoramic windshields are priced by VIN above that.
| Glass type | Industry guide range |
|---|---|
| Tesla Model 3 or Model Y windshield | about $850 to $1,500 |
| Windshield with ADAS camera, incl. calibration | about $800 to $1,500 or more |
| Standard windshield, no features | about $250 to $600 |
